What are your criteria for inclusion on the tool?

To be included as a target seat on My Election Map, we test candidates against a set of minimum political requirements that demonstrate they are a progressive candidate who is aligned with the aims and principles of Green New Deal Rising (the organisation behind the tool).

To do this we check party manifestos (or the most recent possible evidence of party policy) and individual candidates' public communications (e.g. social media profiles) or voting records (if they're incumbent). We will also ask candidates to sign a pledge if they are putting themselves forward for inclusion.

Our minimum requirements (view detailed versions here):

  • Support bold climate action and the aims of the Green New Deal
  • Support action to create a fairer economy - including tackling wealth inequality and increasing public investment
  • Stand up for the rights of migrants in the face of attacks and scapegoating
  • Stand up for the rights of trans people in the face of attacks and scapegoating
  • Support dignity and liberation for Palestinians and an end to the UK's role in the ongoing genocide in Palestine.

How do you know that a target seat is winnable?

We will only include seats on the tool where there is a good chance of winning and an active local campaign on the ground.

We consider a seat winnable if any of the following apply:

  • The candidate/party is incumbent in the seat
  • The candidate/party came second in the seat in the last election
  • The candidate/party came within 10% of the winner in the last election

In cases where these indicators are mixed or unclear, we take into account additional quantitative and qualitative data including publicly available polling, information provided by local parties and demographic data.

We're aware that this set of criteria isn't perfect - that is largely down to the lack of good polling data available for local elections and the vast changes that have happened politically since most of these seats were last elected. We are also reliant on information that is available publicly and is accessible to our volunteer researchers. To account for this, we have erred on the side of inclusion rather than exclusion from the tool - knowing that people using My Election Map to organise in target seats will also have an impact on winnability.

Can I see your full research methodology?

Yes, we will share a link to our full methodology soon. If you're keen to get involved in the process, you can join our volunteer research team

What are the events you're linking to?

Events indexed on My Election Map are mainly run by local parties or candidates themselves. When you click on an event, you will be redirected to their sign up form or event page. You don't need to be a member of any party to join the events listed.

Most events will be doorknocking or other on the ground campaigning efforts to reach voters. If you've never doorknocked before, don't worry! Event organisers can support you and help you find a role you feel comfortable with.

Our volunteer research team finds the events on the map by searching party websites and social media accounts. We can't guarantee that details listed are 100% accurate - make sure you double check after clicking through to the event you want to join.

Who is behind My Election Map?

My Election Map is run by Green New Deal Rising and powered by teams of volunteers responsible for finding target seats and events. We've worked with Movement Research Unit on this process, and the tool itself was built by Common Knowledge using (mapped.tools) .
